Maybe a name change was due—like, 45 years ago.

For over four decades, The Sextant Bar & Galley has been unintentionally fooling the curious and the hopeful with a name that sounds far more risqué than it is. While “Sextant” is a nautical tool, it clearly suggests something a lot less innocent to many first-time visitors. The staff even embraced the confusion with a cheeky sign admitting they’ve been “disappointing people who think we’re a strip club for 45 years.”

There’s something oddly admirable about their dedication to sticking with the name. Instead of rebranding, they’ve leaned into the mix-up with a great sense of humor. At this point, the confusion has probably become a core part of their charm—and their marketing. After all, few things are more memorable than a business that pokes fun at its own unintended reputation.
