During the Great Patriotic War, the structure caught fire, collapsing its dome, and was ultimately exploded in 1943 amid Soviet advances. Uncertainty lingers over which forces triggered the blast, but post-war, it languished as a warehouse before community restoration efforts revived parts of it in the 1990s.
