17. Leafy Sea Dragon (Phycodurus eques)

The leafy sea dragon is a delicate seahorse relative with an elongated body covered in elaborate, leaf-like appendages that perfectly mimic floating seaweed. It drifts slowly through the kelp forests off southern Australia, growing up to 14 inches long.
Its camouflage is so effective that even sharp-eyed adults struggle to spot it among real seaweed. It has no teeth and sucks tiny crustaceans into its long snout like a vacuum. Males carry and incubate the eggs on a special patch under their tail. The combination of dragon-like name, plant-like appearance, and gentle nature makes this creature feel like it swam straight out of a fantasy book—yet every detail is perfectly evolved for survival in its kelp home.
