The Octopus That Wears Coconut Armor

Some species of octopus, particularly the veined octopus, have been observed carrying coconut shells and using them as armor. They’ll lug the halves across the ocean floor, stack them, and then duck inside like a DIY panic room when danger appears. This is one of the rare examples of tool use in invertebrates.

What’s especially sneaky is how premeditated it is. These octopuses aren’t reacting to a threat—they’re planning for one. It’s the ocean’s version of carrying a bulletproof vest “just in case.” For an animal with no bones, they sure know how to protect their soft spots with style.
