The Lizard That Shoots Blood from Its Eyes

The horned lizard has one of the most metal survival strategies in the animal kingdom. When threatened, it builds up pressure in the blood vessels around its eyes—then shoots a stream of blood up to five feet at its attacker. The blood tastes bad to predators like foxes and dogs, making them think twice.

This trick is only used in extreme cases, but it’s effective. Combined with their spiky bodies and ability to blend in with desert terrain, horned lizards are well-equipped to stay off the menu. If intimidation doesn’t work, they turn to gross-out tactics—and it usually does the trick.
