7. The Cigarette Holder with a Built-In Fan

Why suffer from second-hand smoke… when you can blow it directly into other people’s faces? That was the spirit of this 1950s “innovation,” a long cigarette holder with a tiny electric fan attached. It was supposed to suck smoke away from the user’s eyes. Instead, it usually just redirected it into anyone nearby.

Party guests hated it, pets were terrified by the buzzing fan, and batteries ran out halfway through most cigarettes. Even worse, if someone lit up too quickly, the fan could spray hot ash. The inventor claimed it was “the future of elegant smoking.” History, thankfully, disagreed.
