Pressing for Answers
Unable to contain his unease, Mark questioned the late-night calls more directly. “You’re always getting calls at strange hours—who are they from?” he asked, this time without hiding the tension in his voice. Emily’s face stiffened. “They’re mostly about work,” she answered curtly. “And sometimes family stuff.” Her dismissive tone and unwillingness to elaborate sent alarm bells ringing in Mark’s mind.
The vagueness of her replies frustrated him deeply. It wasn’t just what she said—it was how she said it. Her clipped answers and growing irritation made it clear she didn’t want to discuss the topic. Mark tried to stay composed, but her defensive attitude made it harder to believe anything she said. His instincts screamed that something deeper was going on.
