Watching Her Closely

Mark began to examine Emily’s habits with more care, searching for patterns that didn’t align with the woman he had known for years. She seemed more distant, more inwardly focused than before. Her laughter felt more controlled, her movements more mechanical. At times, he caught her staring blankly at her phone, her smile fading the moment the screen turned off.

What troubled Mark most was that these changes were subtle—so subtle they could easily be dismissed as paranoia. But for someone who had just regained his sight, these differences were impossible to ignore. He had no way of knowing whether his suspicion came from genuine concern or a heightened sensitivity from years of blindness. Still, he couldn’t look away.
