Emily’s Concern Grows

Emily began to notice Mark’s physical decline. His pale skin, sluggish steps, and vacant stares alarmed her. One morning, she placed a hand on his arm and said gently, “Mark, you don’t look well. Maybe it’s time to see a doctor.” Her voice held genuine concern, but it only made Mark more anxious. He couldn’t risk a medical evaluation that might reveal his regained sight.

He forced a half-hearted smile and shook his head. “I’m just tired,” he muttered, avoiding her eyes. Emily lingered, unconvinced, but said nothing more. Her concern was real, but so was his fear of exposure. He was trapped between a need to maintain the lie and an urgent desire to confront her. Mark knew that keeping his secret had become dangerous—but revealing it felt just as risky.
