The War of the Stray Cow
In 1827, a Greek cow wandered into Ottoman-controlled territory and was allegedly shot by border guards. Locals demanded justice; when it didn’t come, armed villagers crossed the line to retrieve the cow’s body. The Ottomans retaliated, sparking a regional skirmish.
The conflict lasted several weeks, with cattle-related grievances printed in local newspapers. No one remembers the cow’s name, but its legacy as an accidental martyr lives on in regional folklore. Moo-ving into war has never been so literal.
