The War Over a Bar Tab
In 1850s Bavaria, a rowdy group of visiting Prussian officers racked up a massive tab at a local tavern — and left without paying. The insult to Bavarian hospitality was taken personally by a nobleman whose cousin owned the tavern. Weeks later, a duel escalated into skirmishes between loyalist militias.
While it never reached full-scale war, tensions between Bavaria and Prussia worsened dramatically. Historians still cite “The Unpaid Tab Incident” as an example of how booze and national pride can make terrible financial advisors.
