The Feud Over a Parrot
In 1812, a parrot belonging to a Portuguese nobleman was accused of mimicking royal secrets. Another noble insisted it was trained to insult his wife. A duel followed. When one noble was killed, their families launched a feud that engulfed half the region.
The parrot was eventually captured and gifted to a monastery, where it lived out its days in silence. The conflict, though minor, remains one of history’s weirdest examples of how loose beaks sink more than ships — sometimes, entire friendships.
