The Emu War
In 1932, Australia waged war — against emus. Yes, actual birds. Farmers in Western Australia complained that massive flocks of emus were destroying crops. The government deployed soldiers with machine guns to take care of the problem. The emus, agile and organized, outmaneuvered them.
Despite firing thousands of rounds, the humans lost. The emus won the war, surviving the assault and continuing their rampage. It remains one of history’s most unintentionally hilarious military campaigns — and proof that sometimes birds really do have the upper wing.
