CATWOMAN
Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, is one of the most recognizable characters in the Batman universe: a whip-wielding femme fatale, flip-flopping between being a thief, an anti-heroine, and a closet romantic. She’s been through a whole journey on the big screen over the decades, from Julie Newmar in the ’60s to Zoë Kravitz in The Batman (2022).
But it was Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal in Batman Returns (1992) that really cemented her cult status. Tim Burton’s dark classic presented Catwoman as a frazzled seamstress who, after a near-death experience, transforms into a leather-clad cat burglar with killer charm. Pfeiffer’s performance – with that stark makeup, whip-smart dialogue, and the iconic scene where she literally “comes back from the dead” – forever locked the character into pop culture. It’s that mix of ferocity and mystery that keeps Batman (Michael Keaton) constantly tempted to cross the line.
