Knacker

Knackers were responsible for disposing of dead or injured animals, primarily horses. They processed carcasses into products like glue and fertilizer in often stinky, unpleasant knackers’ yards. Though essential, knackers were socially shunned and lived on the outskirts of society.

The job was physically and emotionally tough, dealing with decay and disease daily. Modern animal disposal regulations and rendering plants eventually replaced knackers, removing this grim trade from urban life.
