The War of the Golden Stool

In 1900, British officials in the Ashanti Empire (now Ghana) demanded to sit on the sacred Golden Stool — a symbol of royal power. Ashanti leaders were horrified, equating the demand with sacrilege. What followed was a bloody uprising against British control.

The war cost hundreds of lives and ended with the stool hidden from British eyes. To this day, the Golden Stool is guarded as a national treasure. Just imagine asking to sit on someone’s throne and getting met with a full-blown revolt.
