The Honor of a Pineapple

In 1735, two noblemen in Portugal got into an argument over who brought the first pineapple to Lisbon. The fruit, then a luxury item, became a matter of personal honor. One insult led to a duel, then factions formed, and eventually, minor battles erupted in surrounding estates.

Historians laugh about the “Pineapple Feud,” but the violence was real. It’s a bizarre reminder that tropical fruit, when mixed with ego, can be explosive. Today, it’s mostly remembered in culinary circles — and in satire about fruit-fueled fatalities.
