The Long-Legged Pants Crisis
In the early 1800s, the ruler of a small German principality banned short trousers in court, demanding long-legged formalwear as a show of dignity. The peasants, who couldn’t afford new clothes, rebelled. The rebellion escalated, and militia had to be called in.
Hundreds were arrested, and the law was repealed, but the conflict was real. Tailors made a fortune during the crisis, and the incident entered fashion history as “The Pants Rebellion.” Turns out, fashion policing is a risky business.
