Exploding Combs
In the early 1900s, a new, inexpensive material called celluloid was used to make combs. But it had one major flaw: it was extremely flammable and could spontaneously combust near a heat source. Some people literally caught fire while combing their hair.
A few unlucky users even lost their lives in these unexpected explosions. All in the name of elegance: celluloid combs proved that beauty could be both fatal and theatrical.
