The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which spans Tampa Bay in Florida, has a history of collapsing due to construction errors in the past. That accident was the result of a small contact accident being overlooked, causing a cargo ship to collide with the bridge pier on a stormy day with poor visibility.

A new bridge was built in 1987 and designed to allow large ships to detect the bridge’s presence early on. In the event of an accident, an emergency alert system has been introduced, which will quickly warn people using the bridge and the surrounding area when an accident occurs. The new bridge is safer than the old one.
