Chopine

Chopines were platform shoes popular from the 15th to 17th centuries in Venice and other parts of Europe. Originally designed to protect feet and dresses from street grime, they gradually grew taller as a sign of wealth. Some chopines were over 20 inches tall, making it almost impossible to walk without assistance from servants.

The higher the chopine, the higher the perceived social status of the wearer. Women often needed walking aids or companions to help them maintain balance. Despite being mocked in literature and theater, chopines remained in vogue for centuries. They highlight how fashion trends can prioritize appearance and symbolism over practicality and comfort.
