THE FIRST SIN

In biblical accounts, Eve tasted the forbidden fruit, seduced by Satan in the guise of a serpent. This led to the expulsion of Eve and Adam from Paradise. This painting depicts the scene where a snake traverses the woman’s body and legs, as she reaches for the apple on her chest.

This event has long been depicted in art, such as in Peter Paul Rubens’ painting “The Fall of Man.” Depictions also exist in the Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter in Rome. This scene inspired John Milton to write an epic poem and Mark Twain to create humorous diaries.
