Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli—pronounced “show-low-eets-quint-lee” and often simply called a Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog—is an ancient breed revered by the Aztecs as spiritual guides for the dead on their journey to the underworld. Known as the “dog of the gods,” the Xolo is an alert watchdog and an intensely loyal companion. Their tough, smooth skin, along with their sharp intelligence, makes them a truly unique breed.

However, that deep loyalty comes with a tendency to be territorial and overly protective. With their mythical and striking appearance, the Xolo can seem intimidating, though they don’t have to be—if properly trained. This breed requires consistent, expert-level training from a very early age, which is why many professionals recommend them only for experienced dog owners.
