Dismissing the signs
Emily shrugged off John’s concern, attributing Max’s behavior to simple devotion. “He’s just looking out for me,” she said casually, ruffling the fur behind Max’s ears.
But even she couldn’t overlook the way his anxiety grew over time. What once seemed like affection started to feel like a warning.
“Maybe he’s picking up on something we’re not,” John joked one evening, half serious. “Dogs have instincts, right?”
Still, without anything concrete to fear, Emily tried to stick to her usual routine.
