Camel Racing with Robot Jockeys

The ancient traditional sport of camel racing has transformed in an interesting way in Dubai in 2004. Surprisingly, robots were used to replace human jockeys. In modern camel races, the camels are guided by remotely controlled robots. Behind this change were accusations of human rights violations, as in many Gulf states in the past, children were used as camel jockeys.

Both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to which Dubai belongs, have banned the use of human jockeys for reasons of robotization and protection against human rights abuses. The UAE was the first country to implement this ban to combat child labor and abuse and to reduce the phenomenon of child jockeys as much as possible. Even after this modern change, camel racing is still a very widespread and lucrative industry in which millions of dollars are at stake.
