False Death by Opossum

Opossums don’t fight, they fake their own demise. When threatened, they enter an involuntary catatonic state that can last for hours. Their bodies go limp, their tongues hang out, and they even emit a foul odor from their glands to sell the performance. Predators usually lose interest in a carcass, so the opossum survives by becoming the world’s most convincing corpse.

This behavior, called thanatosis, is so ingrained that it’s not under conscious control—it’s an evolutionary reflex. Some scientists believe it also triggers a predator’s instinct to avoid rotting meat that could carry disease. In a way, opossums aren’t just playing dead—they’re playing the long game of psychological manipulation.
