Eshima Ohashi Bridge (Japan)

The Eshima Ohashi Bridge is a 1,446.2-meter long bridge connecting Yatsuka-cho, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, to Watari-cho, Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture. It’s also known as the “Roller Coaster Bridge” because it looks like you have to floor the accelerator to get to the top. The visual angle from the ground is 45 degrees. Looking up from directly below, it seems as if cars are falling from the sky. However, there’s a trick to this.

In reality, driving over the Eshima Ohashi Bridge is surprisingly ordinary. You can cross it smoothly and calmly. If you take a photo from the bottom of the slope on the Shimane Prefecture side using the camera’s zoom function, it looks like a very steep slope, but it only *appears* to be at a 45-degree angle; it’s not a big deal in reality. However, the view of Mount Daisen and Daikon Island floating on Lake Nakaumi from the bridge on a clear day is spectacular. There’s no doubt that it’s a leading tourist spot representing Shimane Prefecture.
