Night Soil Collector

Before flush toilets and sewer systems, night soil collectors cleaned out human waste from privies and cesspools, mostly under cover of night to avoid public disgust. They carried heavy, foul-smelling buckets through city streets, often exposed to dangerous germs.

Though necessary for sanitation, the job was physically exhausting and socially stigmatized. The development of modern sanitation infrastructure rendered night soil collectors obsolete, improving urban health and dignity.
