Knocker-Up

In the days before alarm clocks, knocker-ups were hired to wake people by tapping on windows with sticks or shooting peas at glass. Covering entire neighborhoods, they ensured workers and tradesmen made it to their jobs on time.

This demanding job required punctuality and perseverance. Though quaint by today’s standards, knocker-ups were vital to industrial cities. The invention of cheap clocks and phones made their early-morning rounds obsolete.
