The Mustache Dispute of Tashkent
In 1885, two Russian generals allegedly got into a duel over whose mustache was more “imperial.” When troops aligned with each general, a brief civil conflict nearly broke out in Turkestan. It took an emergency telegram from Moscow to defuse the facial-hair-fueled crisis.
