The Hat War of Paraguay

In 1922, Paraguay descended into civil war. The trigger? One faction accused another of trying to outlaw traditional wide-brimmed hats in favor of European styles. The supposed anti-hat decree was enough to divide militias and spark urban battles.

The conflict lasted over a year and claimed thousands of lives. In reality, the hat controversy was just a symbol of deeper class and political divides. Still, it became known as the Hat War — a conflict where fashion and firearms crossed paths.
