They Threw Their Waste in Castle Moats

Castles may seem majestic, but their moats often hid a less-than-glamorous secret. Instead of clear water, they were sometimes filled with wastewater and waste – human or otherwise. They essentially served as open-air toilets.

In the absence of plumbing, servants threw everything into the moats: leftover food, the contents of chamber pots… It’s hard to imagine anything less royal than the smell of a ditch filled with sewage.
