Without a hint of hesitation, the girl climbed into the truck, her expression calm and fearless. She greeted him cheerfully, as if catching a ride with a stranger was the most natural thing in the world. “Good afternoon,” she said with a bright smile. Carter blinked in surprise before responding, his voice laced with confusion. “Uh… hi.” He hadn’t expected her to be so at ease.

Not wanting to make her uncomfortable, he kept his curiosity in check and asked casually, “Where are you headed?” The girl rattled off an address, and Carter quickly realized it was nearly an hour in the opposite direction of where he actually needed to go. He could have declined, but something about her made him push aside his plans. With a small sigh, he gripped the wheel and made up his mind—he was taking her there.
