THE ART OF KOI

Koi carp seem to be a wildly popular choice when it comes to body art. These fish, now bred with a ton of pride and joy in Japan, are thought to have gotten their start back in the early 1800s. That’s when folks started intentionally breeding koi carp for competitions. The color palette on these fish is all over the map, ranging from orange and white to yellow, brown, and even blue.

These cold-water fish are known to live a seriously long time. While the average lifespan of a koi fish is about 50 years, some of them have even clocked in at a whopping 200 years old. One of those exceptional cases is Hanako, a koi who was supposedly a mind-blowing 226 years old when she was examined back in 1974.
