Pam Grier (“Coffy”, 1973)

Born on May 26, 1949, Pam Grier earned the title of cinema’s first African-American action star. Originally named Pamela Suzette Grier, she began appearing in action films in the early 1970s. Grier rose to fame through roles in films like Coffy and Foxy Brown.

In Coffy, she plays a nurse seeking vengeance against local drug dealers. Her character was described as “the toughest one-woman army ever to hit the streets!” and was heavily promoted in the film’s trailer. The movie, filled with sensual and violent elements, achieved commercial success.
