Monkey Bridges (Vietnam)

Vietnam’s monkey bridges are considered some of the most dangerous bridges in the world due to their precarious nature. These bridges are typically made of bamboo logs and are characterized by having a handrail on only one side, if at all. The rest of the construction is extremely basic, adding to the constant fear that the bridge might collapse or that you might slip and fall. The name “monkey bridge” comes from the balancing act required to cross them, which resembles a monkey traversing trees.

Local people are already familiar with the bridges, and they cross them quickly and with ease. Monkey bridges aren’t just made of bamboo; they come in various materials and shapes. For example, some are crude bridges made of palm trees, while others have no handrails at all. What these bridges have in common is that they provide space underneath for boats to pass.
