#10: The 18-Hour Schedule

Life aboard an LA class submarine runs on an 18-hour clock, breaking the day into three 6-hour chunks. One shift is for your main job, another for extra duties like maintenance or cleaning, and the last is reserved for precious sleep. In theory, it’s a rhythm that keeps the boat running smoothly.

In practice, unexpected drills, equipment issues, or watch changes often steal hours from rest. Sleep becomes a luxury, not a guarantee. Many sailors shrug it off with grim humor, repeating, “You can sleep when you’re dead.” Underwater, exhaustion is just part of the mission.
