Gazing in silence

Carter glanced at the clock and saw that he still had forty-five minutes left on the road with this strange girl in his truck. Every now and then, he’d steal a glance at her from the corner of his eye, but she remained eerily still, staring straight ahead without saying a word. The silence between them stretched on, adding an uncomfortable tension to the ride.

Carter couldn’t quite place his feelings about her. Was she simply nervous being in a stranger’s vehicle, or was there something more unsettling about the girl? The longer the silence dragged on, the more the sense of unease grew in the pit of his stomach. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
