A Near-Death Experience

When the doctors finally returned, their expressions were serious. The surgeon explained that during the operation, Lilly’s heart had stopped not once, but twice. They had to use a defibrillator to bring her back both times. Though the surgery was ultimately successful, the danger she’d been in was far greater than anyone had anticipated. Pradeep was horrified and immediately shouted in disbelief. Why had no one told them earlier?

Lilly sat quietly, stunned. She was thankful to be alive but shaken to her core by how close she had come to dying. Pradeep, still reeling, was about to speak again when one of the doctors gently asked him to sit down. “There’s more we need to tell you,” the doctor said. What could possibly follow that kind of news?
