Corsets

Corsets were tight-fitting garments worn to cinch the waist and achieve an hourglass shape. Popular from the 16th through 19th centuries, they symbolized elegance and refinement. Many women wore them daily, lacing tightly to reduce waist size and exaggerate bust and hip proportions.

Some corsets caused health issues, such as restricted breathing, fainting, and deformed ribs. Despite criticism from medical professionals and early feminists, corsets remained mainstream until looser clothing became fashionable in the 20th century. Even today, corset-inspired fashion makes occasional comebacks in modern clothing and lingerie.
