Women in the Middle Ages Used Moss as Pads and Tampons

Menstrual products in the Middle Ages were anything but comfortable. Women fashioned makeshift pads from scraps of cloth or – in poorer areas – from moss. These were stuffed into simple underwear and offered little protection or absorbency.

For lack of modern hygiene products, these makeshift solutions were necessary. Hygienic? Hardly. But it was the only option they had.
