In the Middle Ages, personal hygiene wasn’t a private affair. People went to public bathhouses where they would wash together in large tubs. It was a combination of hygiene and socializing.

But bathing in a broth of other people’s grime sounds anything but refreshing. In comparison, modern showers seem like a blessing of civilization.
