George Harrison and Pattie Boyd, 1968

The photo below features George Harrison, guitarist and singer-songwriter for The Beatles, alongside Pattie Boyd, a former model, photographer, and author who was once his wife. At this time, Boyd was in the midst of one of rock and roll’s most famous love triangles, involving Harrison and Eric Clapton. Notably, Clapton’s famous song “Layla,” as well as most of the songs from his album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs,” were actually inspired by his real-life love for Boyd while she was still married to Harrison.

Surprisingly, Clapton and Harrison were best friends when Clapton penned this song about insatiable love for Boyd. But the constant marital discord and blatant disregard by Harrison took its toll on Boyd, leading her to tire of the situation. She eventually decided to leave Harrison and be with Clapton. Despite choosing Clapton, Boyd, now 74, maintained her friendship with Harrison. This enduring connection followed Harrison’s battle with cancer, which led to his death in 2001.
