More Than a Receipt

As he stepped closer, Melissa noticed he was holding a single piece of paper. At first, she thought it might be a receipt form or some kind of appraisal sheet. That would have made sense in this context. But the way he held it—folded in half, carefully guarded—told a different story. He glanced at it briefly before tucking it into his pocket as if he didn’t want her to see what it said.

Melissa tilted her head slightly, trying to read any clues in his posture or expression. She felt curiosity beginning to mix with nervousness. What could be on that paper? And why was he acting like it was a secret? Something about this situation no longer felt professional. Instead, it was beginning to feel personal, and Melissa couldn’t ignore the tightening knot in her stomach.
