Blackening Teeth Was Considered Beautiful

In some parts of Japan and Southeast Asia, blackened teeth were once a highly sought-after sign of beauty. People would apply a special varnish to their teeth, which also acted as a preservative against decay.

While it may seem strange or frightening today, black teeth at the time symbolized health, elegance, and maturity. The tradition has largely disappeared, but a few communities continue to honor it.
