Xoloitzcuintli
The Xoloitzcuintli — pronounced “show-low-eats-QUINT-lee” and often called Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog — is an ancient breed revered by the Aztecs as a spiritual guide for the dead to the afterlife. Known as the “dog of the gods,” the Xolo makes an excellent watchdog and an extremely loyal companion. Its tough, smooth skin and keen intelligence make it a truly unique breed.
However, this deep loyalty comes with a tendency to be territorial and overly protective. With its striking and almost mythical appearance, the Xolo can seem intimidating, although it doesn’t necessarily have to be — provided it’s well-trained. This breed requires consistent, expert-level training from a young age, which is why many professionals only recommend it to experienced owners.
