Most of us (fortunately) don’t really have a sense of what it would be like to be in an accident involving an aircraft. We probably imagine it will be a lot like the safety briefing videos, where everything’s super chill and the flight attendant is giving you an eerily calm smile as they slowly inflate the life preserver.

In actuality, in the case of a crash, it’s probably not going to be anything like that. There is a very good chance that there will be low visibility, either because of smoke in the cabin or the lights going out. People will be panicking. There may be mass hysteria. Anything you can do to be more prepared to find your way to an exit is going to be a good idea.
