Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge (New Zealand)

Located in the Kawarau Gorge on New Zealand’s South Island, the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is renowned as the world’s first commercial bungy jumping site. This bridge serves as a crucial crossing point over the Kawarau River for runners, bikers, and walkers using the Queenstown Trail.

Suspended 141 feet above the Kawarau River, the bridge is situated within a conservation area and connects Gibbston with Crown Range Road. Completed in the late 1880s by Harry Higginson’s design, it became a primary access route to the Central Otago goldfields. Today, the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is designated as a Category I historic site by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and attracts tourists with activities like bungy jumping and ziplining.
