An odd young girl

Carter had never felt this way about a child before, and it left him more confused than ever. What harm could a little girl like her possibly do to a grown man? He tried to shake off the odd sensation but couldn’t quite rid himself of the unease. It didn’t make sense—why was he feeling so tense and uncertain around her?

He let out a frustrated sigh, trying to remind himself to relax. This wasn’t like him at all. Just last week, he had confronted a man who tried to cut in line and didn’t hesitate to stand his ground. Yet here he was, getting worked up over a small girl. Carter had to admit to himself—something didn’t add up.
