Before washing machines and detergents, people had to get creative when it came to laundry. One surprisingly effective cleaning agent? Aged urine. The ammonia in it helped to break down stains and brighten fabrics – a crucial part of the ancient washing routine.
As disgusting as it sounds, bathing clothes in urine was common practice. Today, we have stain removers and fabric softeners – at least we’re spared the smell of this “miracle cure.”
